Tell us about yourself!
I am a Grade 11 student known by teachers and schoolmates as an epitome of an excellent student. I show great enthusiasm for my academics while managing to juggle extra-curricular activities. I am also an innate leader who has served the student body as the Vice President of the Supreme Secondary Learner Government, and School Publication Editor in Chief at my former school; and now as a Grade 11 Representative of the Central Student Council at my new school. My leadership skills brought me to different positions in various clubs and organizations which serve as my valuable contribution to the school. I am not only excellent in academics and leadership but also in the field of acting and public speaking. I have received multiple awards in Literary Musical since grade school, yet I remain humble and appreciative. I share my talent with fellow schoolmates and the children in my community. I am also very persistent with my advocacy for youth empowerment which allows me to inspire and serve as a role model for the youth. Above all, I portray the essential values and mindset that contributes to my positive attitude towards other people, and my strong faith gives me the courage in surpassing all trials in my journey.
Why does Filipino mental health matter to you?
As a person who has experienced mental health issues, it has always been so important to me to let people know about this. Mental health matters to me because it really impacts my life. It is crucial because it affects every aspect of our well-being. It influences how we think, feel, and act, impacting relationships, work, and overall quality of life. Good mental health allows me to manage stress, make decisions, and interact with others effectively.
Tell us about your experience as a Mental Health Ambassador with Thriving Asians!
Last year, I participated in the Thriving Asians mental health workshop for student government leaders. This year, I returned to my former school as a Mental Health Ambassador to lead the workshop for new student leaders, and the community gathering for returning student mental health leaders. My experience was really great. The workshop allowed me to express myself in different ways. It gave me the opportunity to speak and share my personal experience regarding mental health issues. It also gave me the chance to talk with people who have had similar experiences to mine.
What were some of your favorite memories or impactful moments from the experience?
A memorable moment delivering the Thriving Asians Workshop was when the students shared their responses to the discussion activity and explained their reasoning. The students were very interactive throughout the workshop, which made my role easier and more fun. When they would share, I also learned a lot of things about Filipino mental health stigma/culture that I was not aware of previously. This engagement showed how even though myself and the students are from different sides of the world, mental health is a global topic and something every single person can relate to.
How did the Mental Health Ambassador internship support you?
As a Mental Health Ambassador, I gained practical experience that complements academic learning and offers real-world insights into mental health issues and strategies. I have also gained hands-on experience in the mental health field, developing skills such as communication, advocacy, and project management. This experience has also improved my leadership skills, as it has involved organizing events, leading awareness campaigns, and guiding peers. Additionally, it helped me earn the Best in Leadership Award given by my school.
What have you learned from your family, community, or culture that supports your mental health?
My grandfather always said that having religious beliefs can provide comfort and guidance during difficult times. Faith or a belief in God can offer strength, hope, and a sense of purpose. It can also serve as a source of support and personal resilience.
How will you use your power as a role model or young leader to shape a mentally healthier community?
As a student leader, I will use my voice to raise awareness about mental health. I am committed to promoting mental health awareness, educating others about mental health issues and resources, and leading by example. I will practice and model healthy coping strategies, self-care, and resilience in my own life.
Any closing reflections?
Overall, my experience as a Mental Health Ambassador has helped me manage myself. It has also increased my awareness and understanding of mental health issues, enhanced empathy, and provided a sense of fulfillment from supporting others. I was also able to help reduce stigma, increase access to mental health resources, and promote awareness through healthier conversations around mental wellness. By sharing my knowledge and experiences, I can also encourage others to seek help and support.
